Airway Responsiveness Should Be a Measurement of the Responsiveness of AirwaysFrom the Author:I should like to thank Dr. Edelman for his kind comments on my recent article (1). I am of course delighted to acknowledge the progress that has been made by his organization and many others in the control of secondhand smoke exposure. The sad fact remains that, despite the wealth of evidence to which he alludes, and the tremendous efforts by many people worldwide, there is a vast gap between what he and I would like to achieve, and the reality of 21st century life, in terms of environmental smoke exposure. This gap could be closed at once if there was a real will to legislate, unfettered by vested interests. This failure amounts to institutional, and specifically governmental, child abuse.
